Explore our unique digital tribute to the life and work of famed Italian sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was an Italian artist who mainly worked as a sculptor and architect. He designed many famous secular and religious buildings and public spaces in Rome, including major features of the Vatican City’s St. Peter’s Square. Bernini also contributed colonnades to the exterior of St. Peter’s Basilica, the famous and impressive seat of the Roman Catholic Church.
Despite these impressive accomplishments, Bernini’s legacy has largely been defined by his sculpture. He is often cited as the progenitor of Baroque sculpture, a dynamic style that introduced fluid movement and kinetic energy to the previously static medium. Some commentators liken Bernini’s influence over European sculpture to William Shakespeare’s impact on English drama.
One of Bernini’s most famous sculptures is Apollo and Daphne, created between 1622 and 1625. The piece is now part of the permanent collection of the Borghese Gallery in Rome. WRAPPED Studios recently created a compelling digital art homage to this iconic artwork, depicting elements of the original work in a virtual viewing room.
The resultant video references the cycle of artistic creation, destruction, and rebirth, showing the sculpture being built, dismantled, and rebuilt in its full glory on a continuous loop.
